Yankee Puzzle
We are quilting along with Barbara
Brackman's 2011 Civil War Quilt.
Please Note: If using my method to
make this block you will end up with either
2 blocks or 1 block and 4 quarter square
triangles to use in another project. To
me it is worth it to not have to piece all
those bias edges.
Fabric Requirements:
Fabric A: Beige
2 - 5 1/2" squares - Mark
a diagonal line on back.
Fabric B: Red
2 - 5 1/2" squares - Mark
a diagonal line on back.
Fabric C: Gold
2 - 5 1/2" squares
Fabric D: Blue
2 - 5 1/2" squares
Make Half Square Triangles:
Pair squares with right sides together
in the following combinations:
2 - A/C 2 - B/D
Sew 1/4" away from each side of drawn
line. Cut on drawn line and press seams
in A/C units to the Fabric A and seams
in B/D units to the Fabric D.
Do not square up at this point.
Mark a diagonal line on back of A/C squares
from the 2 corners that are not part of the seam.
Make Quarter Square Triangles:
Place A/C square on top of B/D square
with right sides together, make sure seams
match up, pin in place. The opposing seams should
"lock together" and make precise points.
I have pulled back one side in the photo to
show to proper placement.
Sew 1/4" away from each side of the drawn
line. Cut on drawn line and press seam open
to reduce bulk.
Squaring a quarter square triangle
can be a bit tricky. The diagonal
line on the ruler should run along the
seam from top right to bottom left.
The intersection of the the 2 1/4"
grid lines should be exactly in the center
of the square where the 4 fabrics come
together. Now trim the right side and
top. Turn the square so the right top is
now in the left bottom and square the
two remaining edges to 4 1/2".
Find 4 quarter square triangles that
are EXACTLY alike. Lay them out and
look at them because they are very similar.
Now take the 4 same units and layout
as shown and sew together in 2 rows.
Press seam in row 1 to the left and seam in
row 2 to the right.
Sew rows together and press final
seam open to reduce bulk.
Square to 8 1/2".
I used my remaining 4 quarter square
triangles to make another block but this
time I put the lighter fabrics on the outside.

ReplyDeleteI'm quich this week: block # 49 is ready!! Have a nice Sunday!!
I came home from the Williams/Woodland Housewalk (Fort Wayne) and decided to try to see if I could "find" you! If I'm not mistaken, you are the blogger who was taking pictures of the quilt in the bedroom of a Queen Anne home! I always enjoy meeting other bloggers from nearby! I shall spend a little more time checking out your posts this afternoon...
ReplyDeleteYes Rebecca that was me! So nice to meet you last night, wasn't the tour beautiful? Ellen
