Peterson's Stars and Stripes
We are quilting along with Barbara
Brackman's Civil War Quilts 2011.
Fabric Requirements:
I agree with Becky's recommendation
to increase strip sizes and square
after finishing applique.
Fabric A: Light (White)
1 - 2 1/4" x 9" strip - Top Strip
2 - 1 7/8" x 9 " strip
Fabric B: Dark (Red)
1 - 2 1/4" x 9" strip - Bottom Strip
2 - 1 7/8" x 9" strip
Fabric C: Dark (Blue)
1 - 6" square
Strip piece the red and white strips
taking care to place the larger strips
as the top and bottom strip. Remember
when strip piecing to begin sewing each
strip from opposite sides. By leaving a
thread tail from the side you started
from helps you keep track. This will
keep your block tight and square and
your block will not arc and bow.
Appliquing the Star:
This is the method I used to applique
the star to the block. You should use
the method you are most comfortable with.
Cut a square of iron on adhesive,
I used Heat n Bond, the same size
as the 6" blue square. Adher to
back of fabric following manufacturer's
directions. Trace star onto paper
side of square. You can find the star at:
Cut out star shape and peel off
paper backing. Center on block
and adher following manufacturer's
directions. I finished the edges of
the star by hand using a blanket stitch.
Square block to 8 1/2". Remember
the block is no longer a square since
you added on to the top and bottom
strips, take care with squaring.
