Civil War Remembered ~ Block 29

Railroad Crossing

We are quilting along with Barbara
Brackman's Civil War Quilt.

Fabric Requirements:

Fabric A: Dark (Green)
2 - 2 7/8" squares - cut on diagonal
1 - 5 1/4" square - cut on diagonal twice

Fabric B: Light (White print)
2 - 1 1/2" x 16" strips

Fabric C: Medium (Orange & White)
1 - 1 1/2" x 16" strip

Fabric C: Medium (Orange print)
1 - 3 1/2" square

Layout as shown and sew the
16" strips together along long
edge with the medium in the middle.
Remember when strip piecing to
alternate the side you begin sewing
on with each additional strip.  By
leaving the "thread tails" on where
you started each seam helps you
keep track.  This will keep your
strip set tight and square, otherwise
it will arc and bow and will not
cut well.

Square one end of strip
rectangle and cut into
4 - 3 3/8" squares.

Layout as shown and sew
3 squares together.  Press
seams to the inside.

Layout strip square and
large triangles as shown.

Sew together and press
seams to the outside.
Make 2.

Layout units as shown and
sew together taking care to
match seams.  Press seams
to the outside.

Layout small triangles in
corners as shown and sew.
Press seams to the outside.

Square to 8 1/2".

Generally I use a scant 1/4"
seam but found this needed
an exact 1/4" seam.

I am finally back home in
Indiana and I haven't left
my studio all day!  We
circumnavigated the globe,
quilting all the way!

I made a few more of
these blocks just for fun.

  1. Thank you for sharing directions for the new CW block, looks pretty straight forward. Will try to get it sewn today between women's soccer and baseball games.

  2. Your CW block instructions and photographs are very helpful. Your insight into alternate construction usually makes for a more accurately finished block. I often refer readers of my blog who are making these blocks to your blog for that very reason. Thanks a million.
