Civil War Remembered ~ Block 6

Richmond


This is Week 6's block as we
quilt along with Barbara Brackman's
Civil War Quilt 2011.


It is said, that during the American
Civil War, for every man killed in
battle, two died of illness or disease.


Many died from infections because
doctors at that time did not know
they needed to wash their hands to
help stop the spread of infection.


Hospitals could be a private residence,
barns, tents or wagons.


Medical practices at the time could
be quite primitive, often the treatment
for a broken arm or leg was amputation.
