Civil War Remembered ~ Block 3

Seven Sisters

We are in Week 3 of Barbara Brackman's
2011 Civil War Quilt.

I visited the Civil War Museum on
Monument Circle in Indianapolis today.

"It is well war is so frightful, else we would
grow too fond of it."
General Robert E. Lee

...we could see the Stars and Stripes floating
over the parole camp.  It was too far away to
even see the stripes, but we knew it was
"the old flag" and as it floated out I felt as if
I loved it as never before.  Perhaps every
American would appreciate it more if he were
obliged to live for a while out from under its
protection.  "Long may it wave, o'er the land
of the free and the home of the brave."
Joseph Taylor Elliott

We were taken out...and marched across the
James River to Bell Island.   ...men die more
or less everyday with cold and hunger.  Our
rations per day are two spoons full of beans
and a little piece of cornbread equal to a half
pint of meal.
Thomas Horan

But oh!  I shall never forget the looks...of some who
were there to welcome our return...  As they gave
us their hands, their eyes looked past us, peering,
looking for someone who would never come.
